Caf Abandoned $1bn Deal by Switching Afcon to Four-Year Cycle

The Confederation of African Football walked away from a deal worth at least $1bn in secured income over eight years after deciding to move the Africa Cup of Nations from a biennial to a four-yearly tournament. Caf has had no long-term financial deal in place since 2019. President Patrice Motsepe said a decision on a winning bid would be made "in due course". Caf has been without a long-term financial deal since 2019, meaning African football's governing body has forfeited over $1bn in secured income with no replacement agreement yet in place.
